Ram Chandra Uniyal Government Post Graduate College (Formerly Government
Post Graduate College) Uttarkashi was established on 30th June 1969 with the
sanction of three subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, three lecturers and
twelve student strength only at graduation level.In 1970-71, Government of Uttar Pradesh
sanctioned two more subjects at undergraduate level viz., Zoology and Botany. In 1972
– 73, the college have got the sanction of arts faculty with the subjects Hindi,
English, Sanskrit, Economics, Geography, History and Political Science at undergraduate
level. Commerce faculty came in existence in 1974. For Post Graduate studies, college has
got sanction in Chemistry, Botany, Hindi, Economics and Political Science in 1975 –
76 and for English, Sanskrit, History and Physics in 1978-79. During 1979-80, Drawing and
Painting and Sociology at undergraduate level and commerce at post graduate level were
started. During 1985 – 86, the college have got the permission of starting Home
Science at undergraduate level and Geography at post graduate level. Post graduate studies
in Zoology and Mathematics and Music at undergraduate level was started with the
permission of Uttaranchal Government in the year 2001 – 2002. Thus, college now
running four graduate departments viz. Home Science, Drawing and Painting, Sociology and
Music and Thirteen Post graduate Departments viz. Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics,
Geography, Chemistry, Economics, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, History, Political Science and
Mathematics.
Since
its inception, the college passed out two major natural calamities viz., major flood in
1978 in the mighty river Bhagirathi and massive earthquake in 1991. Both have affected the
college progress considerably. Presently college is trying to came out of the impact of
massive land slide which started from 24th September, 2004. This has disturbed
the teaching process particularly in science faculty which has been declared under buffer
zone of the land slide area.

The
college is running study center of IGNOU since 2000-01 and providing certificate, diploma
and degree in various vocational programs. The programs available
at IGNOU study center are B.A., B.Sc. B.Com., BTS, PGDRD, DTS, DECE,
DNHE, BPP, CPLT, CDM, CFN, CIC, CIG, CNCC, CPFM, CRD, CTPM, CTS, CWDL, CWED and CES. All
the programs are career and job oriented. |
